Writing GoalsNovember 1, 2019
Hi everyone! After last week’s somewhat downtrodden piece about my general health, I promised something a little more upbeat this week. So, here it is. I want to talk about my writing goals.
As you’ll be aware if you have either been following the site for a while or if you simply landed on the homepage, I’m an author. In fact, I have several novels available and appear in a couple of different anthologies.
I’ve always had a couple of goals in mind with my writing. Recently, while I was laid up on the sofa grumbling about my back, I realized something about them. Let’s have a proper look.
Cracking The Top 100: Success is relative, I’ve always believed that. Still, one thing I wanted to do was to crack the Top 100 in some sort of official list. It never really bothered me which one, because my aim was to build on successes. How close have I come so far?
Well…I did it! Several times over in fact! The highest I’ve managed to climb so far was in Canada. There, my novel lesbian sci-fi/mystery Addict actually managed to hit 23 in the Kindle charts for LGBT Sci-Fi. I’m sure you can imagine, I’m thrilled about that!
Making A Difference: I’ve always loved reading. As a kid, I devoured books whenever I could. The most important times for me though were when I was sick. If I had to take the day off school, I’d usually end up giving my Mum my pocket money and asking her to go down to the local WH Smith and grab me the next novel in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. Books made me feel better. As such, I set the goal for myself that I wanted tow rite something that touched someone in some way. Whether it made them feel better when ill, or just that they struck a chord with them, I’d be happy. Has it happened?
Yes, as it happens. I wrote the story ‘Dear Sis’ for the furry anthology, ROAR 9: Resist. The story is told I the style of a letter that a genderfluid fox has written to their sister. It’s easily the most personal story I’ve written, as a lot of the experiences that the letter covers match my own. What I really love though is that, multiple times now, readers have reached out to me on social media to tell me how much they loved the story. It has helped people understand what being genderfluid means.
I’m near crying typing that because that particular goal was one that really mattered to me.
Published Traditionally: I have no issue with self-publishing. In fact, I have self-published books before. I always wanted to be traditionally published too though. Whether it be via an agent or working with a small press, I just wanted to be able to say that ‘this publisher believed in my work’. Has it happened?
Again, yes. The Cassie Tam Files is published by NineStar Press, who are an LGBTQ focused publishing house. And you know what else? They’ve been awesome to work with!
So, what does all this mean? Well, it means I achieved both goals that I set for myself. As such, I think it’s time that I set some new goals. What do I want to achieve moving forward? This is what I’ve come up with:
Cracking The Top 10: I’ve come close but never made it into the top 10 of a chart. This is the ‘sales success’ part of my goals right now. If I can manage this, then the next one will be to top a chart.
Writing More Than Books: Books are my go-to for writing, whether it be a novel or a short story. I do want to write more than that too though. To that end, I’m currently working on a movie script. I also want to work on a game at some point, and a comic too. That all kinda ties in with my next goal.
Writing For The Franchises I Love: This one is a long-term goal compared to the others. There are a few different franchises that I’ve grown up loving, and to write for any of them in an official capacity would be…well…awesome! The main one though is Sonic the Hedgehog. I don’t care whether it’s a story/novel, a game, a comic, or even just an advert. I want to write something official for the Blue Blur. So, if you’re reading this IDW and SEGA, maybe get in touch? I’d love to do something for the next IDW Sonic Annual.
Well, that’s about it. Knowing that I achieved the things I set out to do really does make me smile. Now, it’s time to try hitting some other milestones.
But what about yourselves? What goals do you have in the things you love to do? Whether it be in writing fiction, blogging, podcasting, or anything else, let me know in the comments below!
