Tangle and Whisper Issue 4
IDW Publishing
Story: Ian Flynn
Art: Evan Stanley
Colours: Leonardo Ito
“Showdown!” This is it! Whisper’s ready to confront her old foe, and Tangle’s more than happy to back her up! Of course, if the bad guy knows he’s walking into a trap, he’s going to be prepared, right? Maybe this won’t be so easy, since he’s got a Badnik army backing him up! The final fantastic issue of the first Sonic the Hedgehog mini-series in almost two decades!

As has been the case since the start of Sonic’s run with IDW, the cover selection is excellent this month. I got Cover A by issue artist Evan Stanley, and it’s a really nice underwater piece. So nice in fact that I think it’s a shame we didn’t get a scene like this in the actual issue. The other two covers are both really different too, with Nathalie Fourdraine’s Cover B being more action-focused while Cover RI by Abigail Starling is more chilled.

Sticking with the aesthetics, Evan’s work remains as strong as ever, giving us a healthy mix of dynamic action scenes and suitably over the top facial work. This is all complimented nicely by Leonardo’s colours. Not only do the characters themselves get treated to a vibrant palette, but the general tone of the panels is also given a mix of hues depending on the setting. The whole thing really pops as a result.

In terms of the story, you get exactly what you’d likely expect after the last issue. Basically, it’s a big battle with Mimic, that sees Tangle and Whisper work together to thwart the shapeshifting villain. We get to see plans in action, some more wisp interaction, and the inevitable win for the good guys. The aftermath is also great, giving us a glimpse of Mimic’s fate and cementing Tangle and Whisper’s friendship to boot.

Overall, this has been an enjoyable spin-off story. While not likely to surprise many readers, this final issue does exactly what it needs to, and gives us a satisfying conclusion to the story. With nothing that I can really criticize, this one has to get the full 5 out of 5. I highly recommend you grab this and the other issues in the series the first chance you get!
