If you’re a fan of the ‘slasher’ subgenre of horror, then today’s post may be for you! Today, we’re looking at the upcoming Mycho Entertainment release, PandaMonium! Let’s start with the official press release.

PandaMonium

PandaMonium is the 9th feature from the British independent film company Mycho Entertainment Group and writer-director MJ Dixon. A prequel to Slasher House II (2016) where we were first introduced to the infamous Panda-headed Killer Jacob Jakushi (David Hon Ma Chu), Jacob now makes a return in the characters first standalone film.

The guys on Level 6 like to work hard, and party harder. That means the best booze, the finest drugs and hottest women money can buy. Unfortunately for them the Strippers they’ve just hired have come with an unwanted guest.
Jacob, Jakushi, the infamous ‘Stripper Ripper’ with an oversized Panda mask and a taste for exotic dancers has these girls in his sights and he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.
It’s now Strippers VS PandaHeaded Serial Killer as they fight to survive the office party from hell.

Writer-director MJ Dixon had the following to say about the film:

“PandaMonium takes the idea of Strippers at the office party to a whole new level, it really works with what we’ve done before and has some real fun with it. We leaned into the fun aspect of the idea whilst still maintaining the tension you’d find being trapped in an office block with a serial killer.

“We’re super excited to be premiering the film at Horror on Sea on January 18th it’s a place where we’ve premiered every Mycho movie and we can’t wait to return with our latest PandaHeaded creation.”

TRAILER REACTION

So, how is the film looking? Well, what follows is my trailer reaction.  Before we get to that though, I want to point out that I haven’t seen any of Mycho Entertainment Group’s work before. I know that the Mycho Universe has a bunch of different films within the timeline and that the Slasher House series is their most famous. Other than that though, my knowledge only extends as far as having seen some photos of the Panda-headed Killer online a few times. With that all being said, let’s get to that trailer!

The first thing I want to mention is that the trailer does a good job of two very important things. The first of these is giving us the general set up. From watching it, you know that guys on level 6 are high-powered, laddish types. You also know that the strippers very much view it as an important night because they can earn a month’s worth of cash in one go. Finally, if you pay attention to body language, you also know that the character Daniel Prince is perhaps not used to being an office environment where strippers are apparently an expected part of the year. My guess is that he is built to be the sympathetic member of the Level 6 guys.

The second thing it does well is to avoid spoilers. Now, we already know that this is a prequel to Slasher House 2, and as such, the Panda-headed Killer has to survive. Which means the bad guy doesn’t get killed. Other than this though, the film doesn’t give too much away. For one, while it’s a safe assumption that people will die, we don’t actually see any of the deaths in the trailer. The result of that is that it becomes harder to tell who will die and when. For a slasher film, I find that important. Unless you’re showing a death from a prologue scene, confirming core cast deaths in a trailer ruins some of the tension, in my opinion. So, well done there.

The killer himself works well. It’s a simple – and quirky – mask, so it both hides the killer’s identity well and gives him a unique look. I noticed that he had a rather silky voice too. Smooth and eloquent enough to create a creepy disparity with the mask, but with enough conviction to create menace.

As to the other characters, I felt for the strippers. Most of the males came across pretty poorly in the little snippets we got of them (which I think is likely intentional), while the women are really just trying to earn some money. Knowing that the killer has a preference for strippers when it comes to victims puts them in immediate danger that they wouldn’t have expected.

Overall, I thought that the trailer made the film comes across as a decent representation of the genre. It looks darkly fun, and that’s really what you want with this sort of set up.

But those are just my thoughts. What about yourselves? Are you aware of the Mycho Universe? What do you think of the Pandamonium trailer? Let me know in the comments below!
