Murenase! Seton Gakuen Episode 9 [Anime Review]March 3, 2020
Welcome, one and all, to my continued episodic review series for the anime Murenase! Seton Gakuen, aka, Seton Academy: Join The Pack. The series has been on form of late, so it feels a shame to say that episode 9 kinda felt like a step back in some regards for me. Let’s talk about it.
The first half of the episode was pretty good. Meimei noticed a Tarsier called Manako watching her, but every time she approached her, Manako committed suicide. Jin told Meimei it’s because she’s too overbearing, and – with the help of Miyubi – the panda set out to prove him wrong. Various shenanigans ensued, including Manako getting a nosebleed over pictures of Meimei in a swimsuit, and her headbutting Miyubi, killing them both. In the end though, it all worked out. Meimei was able to befriend her and introduce her to the cooking club.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with this arc. The humour was gentle, the over the top moments were the right side of silly, and in the end, Meimei was able to show some restraint. Honestly, it’s all that simple. Which makes it hard to write about because there isn’t much else to say.
The side story about King Shishino and Shiho continued with Shiho declaring herself to be in heat. Shishino was happy about that because, even with a deadly typhoon rolling in, lions only last twenty seconds apparently, so it won’t take long. Anyway, Shiho wants him to meet her parents first, and he does, declaring that he has thrown away his lionhood. Shiho’s parents approve of him…but only if he enters the impala tournament.
Short sections with little too them. Shishino’s visibly hungry want for sex was creepy, but the general feel of the two characters together still has a touch of sweetness to it. Again, there was little to it, so there isn’t much to say.
When the typhoon hit, the below-ground dorms were flooded, and the students had to share with those above ground. Jin was not happy about that. He ended up sharing with Miki, who was having doubts about her role as Student Council President. She said she has been watching Jin and everything he does breaks the moral code, but the school is happier. She wonders if he shod be president instead…until his fantasy version includes no animals.
Anyway, the students all find Miki and come to her with their problems. It takes a while, but she helps all of them. She starts to question if they would still appreciate her if they knew she disapproves of interspecies relations, and Jin points out that what she just did – speaking to all of them – was an interspecies relation. She realizes that she can be fine, strips, and we end up with her staying with the girls, who she insists strip too.
Okay. The general message here, I liked. Miki had her doubts because of how she interpreted the cooking club but grew to learn that relationships can be many things. She showed how good she is in her role, and grew to accept herself more. That’s good.
My word though, that was more fan service than we’ve had in a while. From Miki in her underwear – and naked at one point – to the other girls stripping, there as just so much. Throw in the male naked mole-rats filming and declaring it okay because nakedness is not indecent to them and Meimei standing with Ranka purely because they’re both on the smaller side, and it was just not for me.
I’ve enjoyed the story progression, as simple as it is. I’ve enjoyed the way the animals are interpreted as kemonomimi. The fan service just feels tacked on to me.
There was definitely a dip in quality here. The problem is, it’s not even just the fan service. Previous episodes have left me with plenty to talk about, but everything in this week’s offering felt like it was just there. That was it. There wasn’t anything overly wrong with most of it, there just wasn’t anything standout. That’s a shame because things were definitely getting on track. Perhaps the red-haired girl that appeared at the end will get it back on track.
So, those were my thoughts. But what about yourselves? Did you enjoy this episode? Do you agree or disagree with any of my observations? Let me know in the comments below.
