30 Day Gaming Challenge: #23 – Game With The Best Graphics Or Art Style
June 12, 2018 0 By mattdoylemediaWelcome, one and all, to the latest installment of the 30 Day Gaming Challenge. Today, we hit Day 23, which is … Game With The Best Graphics Or Art Style.
OK, so this is obviously very subjective. There are plenty of games out there with quite stunning graphics. I get this impression that this is more about a game that had a real impact on me visually though. I’m gonna split this by era. First up, the modern era …
Resident Evil VII on the Xbox One. I get headaches when playing games without my glasses, so as yet, I haven’t tried VR just in case. This game though genuinely made me scared to try it. It creeped me out, even playing normally because it felt so visually real to me. If it were in VR, I honestly think I may have a heart attack.
Moving to the past though, I think that the first game that genuinely blew me away visually was probably Metal Gear Solid on the PS1. Growing up, I really loved the old sprite style of the classic games, and while some of my early forays into the PS1 era were nice, this one just felt a lot more real than anything else I’d played at the time. I’ll grant you that they haven’t aged brilliantly, mind you, but at the time, it was a revelation.
But what about yourselves? What games did you think displayed visual excellence?

Oh man…Metal Gear Solid…that was such a brilliant game: light years ahead of it’s time. A game that also impressed me a lot, graphics wise, was the orginal God of War on PS 2. Also very impressive at the time of it’s release 😀
I think that the Irish God of War may be the only one I’ve played in the series.
MGS was indeed way ahead of is time though. For a long time, that was the only game anyone in my friendship circle was talking about.
I’m quite a bit into pixel graphics, so –

Gnnn, BlueByte’s Albion is very sexy, even today. Also the great setting (houses grown from plants).
There’s of course more modern games that pull off that kind of visuals, like Eushully’s Battle Goddess series or stuff like OpenTTD … well, generally I just like them.
There’s a charm to pixel graphics I think, especially when done well. Alundra always stood out to me in that respect. The scenery in that game did a great job of combining the mroe antural areas with some steam-punk-ish areas.
