Unique Excerpt

“Innovation” Unique Excerpt: Seed

Val Muller

The suit feels heavy, like I’m trapped in a box.

Alive within the suit is better than dead from plague. Or “alive” in the catacombs.

The fields are overgrown, have been for years with all the Bios underground. The wind kisses the grass in serpentine patterns long forgotten, patterns the Bios couldn’t imagine anymore. My mechanical hand stores the seed envelope in the mechanical pocket in my androgynous torso. In these suits, there is no gender. Gender is, always has been, in the mind. I am finally, unequivocally, female.

The soil breaks easily under my suit’s strength. The weeds and grass tear out of the garden with no effort at all. The soil is rich and damp with the rains. I think of the way my long hair would have blown in the wind. The way I would have pursed my lips, thrown my hips, posed in the golden sun. I miss Peter. More than my photographer, he was my support.

I remember when he took me to the clinic, the screams from haters. They said I would never create: that was the thing keeping me from owning the “she” I fought so hard to be. They called me a robot, an abomination of lost humanity, in the suit.

During Quarantine, they stored me away, afraid I would rise up and kill, like so many dystopian films. For years I existed only in my mind. But now, they need me. They’ve woken me. They’re out of food. The atrocity of a suit protects me from their plagues. And I, alone, hold their future in my hands.

My metallic finger dents the dirt, drops in a seed, covers it again. The wind kisses my face.

You see, I can create. And because they were wrong, they will live.
