Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 8 [Anime Episode Review]

Welcome, everyone, to my continued weekly review series for the 2020 reboot of Digimon Adventure! This week, we’re getting ther eturn of Yamato. So, let’s see how it went.

The Children’s Attack On The Fortress: Recap

The kids were almost to the Cloud Continent when they spotted what appeared to be a lighthouse in the middle of a fortress. As it turned out, this was actually a Solarmon searching for targets, and once the kids were spotted, Gorimon launched an assault. The kids barely made it onto dry land when a mass of Tankmon appeared and started attacking them. A mysterious stranger made the save and took them to cave.

The stranger is soon revealed to be Yamato – and, of course, Gabumon – who are planning to sneak into the fortress to see if it’s linked to the stuff going on in Tokyo. So, Yamato called them dead weight and told Taichi to keep them safe while he and Gabumon do just that. That plan worked as well as you’d think, and they found themselves boxed in. Joe tried to surrender and got attacked as a result, but that spurred Taichi into action.

From there, it was all action. Taichi and Sora went running off, and Mimi and Joe drew the attention of the Tankmon (albeit unintentionally). With the Tankmon distracted though, Yamato and Garurumon advanced again, only to find themselves outgunned by a massive Darktyrannomon. Luckily for him, Sora and Birdramon took over the fight, allowing the boys to dash inside.

There, Taichi and Greymon took out Solarmon, and Garurumon was able to leap up toward Gorimon. Yamato looked back and saw all the battles going on to help him and that caused his Digivice to glow. Garurumon powered up and took out Gorimon. Garurumon’s triumphant howl gave Mimi and Joe a boost, and that caused Palmon and Gomamon to evolve and take out the Tankmon. Meanwhile, Greymon made it back to help Birdramon push Darktyrannomon off a cliff. Seriously, they just kicked him off the top of a cliff.

Back inside the fortress, Yamato sort of apologised for calling them all dead weight, saying, “My bad.” Then, they found a control room and Taichi’s Digivice allowed him to translate the screen. The episode ended with him declaring it to be about the Holy Digimon.

The Children’s Attack On The Fortress: Thoughts

This was a lot of fun. I was really happy to see Yamato return, and for us to finally get a good look at Gabumon. Yamato was playing it cool all episode and was very stand-offish. We did see Gabumon hinting that he just wanted to keep everyone safe though, so it’s clear that he’s an actual good guy. The action was fun again, though the climactic battles were perhaps over a little quickly for my liking.

In terms of humour, the episode did well. I loved the surrender scene as Joe grabbed Mimi’s towel to use as a white flag, and she was very upset that it had been burnt up after the attack. Only for Palmon to deadpan that it was Sora’s towel. That was great.

I kinda expected Koshiro to arrive this week, but he didn’t. When he gave the short update on Tokyo though, we learned that, after less than a day, stores are running out of food. It’s amazing what a bit of panic buying will do, isn’t it?

Overall, I enjoyed this. Digimon Adventure 2020 is proving far better than I expected, and I’m really hoping that continues.

But those are just my thoughts. What did you think of these episodes? Let me know in the comments below.
