Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san Episode 9 [Anime Review]

Welcome, one all, to my continuing episodic review series for Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san. This week, we got to see the titular dynamic duo having a fight! Let’s have a look at what happened.

A Hair-rific Argument!

We joined the episode with Inugami and Nekoyama stood apart, clearly annoyed with each other. This led very quickly into the pair splitting off and us getting a glimpse of what happened. Ushiwaka and Nezu spoke with Inugami and put forward a theory that she probably said something unnecessary. Inugami denied this, stating that it may seem unnecessary to others, but it’s important to her.

But not everything is as it seems. Aki is dragged into listening to Nekoyama’s side of things. As it turns out, she wants to straighten her hair because it’s generally so unruly. When she mentioned it to Inugami, the pup exclaimed that correcting her cat hair would be like taking coffee out of coffee.

Nekoyama asked if she would like her with unruly hair but not with straight hair and Inugami denied it. She said that straight hair its own charm but she likes her unruly hair even more … And then said, “you would get it straightened, even knowing how I feel? I won’t allow it!” Nekoyama got annoyed and told her that she can do what she wants with her own hair, and Inugami has no right to complain because it’s not like they’re going out or anything!

Aki exclaimed that it’s a lovers’ quarrel and that’s where we left it this week.

Fun But Slightly Flawed

There was a lot of good stuff in this episode. I think Aki had the best line right at the start, telling Inugami and Nekoyama “If you’re both going to say the other’s at fault “for being too cute”, I’ll hit you.” That one made me laugh.

The argument itself was actually pretty decent too. For one, it’s a partially trivial thing that has been blown out of proportion by the girls, which is actually quite accurate for how easily things can escalate in high school. It also had the touch of both girls wanting their feelings taken into account, demonstrating the need for give and take in a relationship, at least to a point.

Nekoyama was right, of course. It’s her hair after all. But, she got mad and said something she regretted. I liked the set up here. It showed Nekoyama both displaying some fire and then retreating into her more self-conscious side when things calmed down. Meanwhile, Inugami was similar. She did say that both hairstyles had charm, but that she prefers one over the other. There was a touch of support there, that she managed to blow by reverting to her more brash side. That was all fun.

The issue I had was the ending. There wasn’t actually any resolution. I seriously doubt it will continue the arc in the next episode either. In a way, that’s not entirely unrealistic, my own kids had arguments that they put across as massive but that blew over overnight, but I would have liked to see them make up here anyway. Still, that’s a minor nit-pick. This was, overall, a good episode in my opinion. But what about yourselves? Have you seen this show? What did you make of this episode? Let me know below!
