Okay, so there’s a Sonic talk coming to SXSW on March 16th. Like many people, I’m expecting there to be plenty of being covered things. Maybe even a new game announcement? Most of all though, a reveal of Sonic’s physical appearance in the upcoming movie seemed like an obvious thing to cover. Well, as per Polygon’s post, it looks like Hamagami/Carroll Inc. may have leaked just that already! So, what does he look like? Well, here he is:
Now, the pictures got taken down pretty quickly, so it was obviously not meant to go up just yet. Well, unless it was an intentional leak to gain some momentum for the movie and maybe a full trailer at the aforementioned talk, of course. Personally, I’m still reserving full judgement on the likelihood of the film being good until I see an actual trailer. I do have some thoughts on the design though.
In short, I like it. He’s not the slender hedgehog of the modern games, or the shorter ball of spikes of the older games. He’s not Sonic Boom, Sonic SATAM, AOSTH, or Sonic X. He’s clearly designed to be his own thing, while still retaining enough of the expected visual style to be recognizable.
There are some really nice touches there too. For one, the spikes don’t look like fur. They look like spines that happen to match the fur colour covering most of the rest of his body. That should placate the people worried about him having no real spines at all despite the aim of adding some realism. His build makes sense too; it’s toned, and with a shoulder shape that will make sure he fits alongside the real actors without looking too cartoony in comparison. The eyes are well done too, melding the largeness and cuteness of the Sonic we all know with a slight reduction in size to that they don’t take up most of the head. The ridges around them will make it easy to convey emotion too, even if their thickness makes him resemble the Werehog of Unleashed a little in terms of brow shape.
Yes, the shoes are different. But again, they wanted him to fit I the real world, so switching to colour themed trainers makes sense. It looks like they’ve gone with using white fur on his hands instead of gloves. That was unexpected, and it is a little unusual to look at it, but I’m not bothered by that. If anything, it’ll probably end up looking quite cute, like when cats have different colour paws.
So, that’s what I think. But what about yourselves? Is this what you expected? Do you like it? Let me know in the comments below.
It’s better than I thought it would be judging from those leg images. Is it how I would have liked his design to be? No, but it could have been a lot worse.

Aye. I would still much rather have ha da full CG film in the style of the modenr cut scenes, but I really don’t get the full blown ‘worst thing ever’ resposne that it’s been getting.

I agree with Krystallina, it could have gone worse. Still, it’s decent. He looks better than the first tease with the legs.

Yeah, I think they may have tweaked it a little since those posters. This feels likea good balance to me.

Yeah it looks like they edited Sonic and tried to make more cute and friendly. At least he doesn’t look like a realistic hedgehog.

It would be hard to make a decent realstic hedgehog anthro that would fit with the CG/live action mix I think. Though, oddly, they sort of ahd a middle ground in the UK Sonic comics. They did an origin story where we saw Sonic before he got turned blue and Robotnik was created. He was still drawn in a Sonic style, but with a clear want to be more like an actual hedgehog. Oh yeah I think I heard about this version of Sonic. I remember that the UK comics had a different story of Sonic and Eggman aside from the Archie comics. I feel like we might get a story similar to this comic for the movie. I heard Sonic was going to act like delinquent in the movie.

Yeah, the UK ones were completely different. We got a bunch of other SEGA games in the comic too, like adaptions of Streets of Rage and Decap Attack.
That’s what I’d read too. Sonic is a delinquent initially, but it will play out like a buddy cop movie.

Yeah and based on the panels and pictures I seen, it looks like a dark version of Sonic’s world and I saw they even had an evil Super Sonic. It sounds like this movie is going to try and be like Detective Pikachu where the human teams up with an anthropomorphic animal and having a plot.

I love psychotic Super Sonic. It was such an interesting take on the character and gave a real risk to using the form. At one point, Super Sonic was getting ready to murder the good guys.
That’s what it looks like so far. I’m nto opposed to it, I mean I enjoyed Sonic X, which had that sort of set-up, but it will really all come down to the execution.

I heard about that. That sonic was ready to kill. I never expected Sonic to try and kill his own friends. It’s something you never expect from the games.
I wonder how are they are going to portray Dr. Robotnik with Jim Carey.

There’s been some great fan art of Carey in the role. If they go with anything close to it, he’ll look good. I’m expecting something close closer to Sonic 2006 Robotnik.

That is what I was thinking too. I can see him either the 2006 version or even like the UK comic where he looks like a regular professor before he turned evil.

Either would be logical given he’ll be a live action character. Who knows though. I’m hoping we’ll get a glimspe during the SXSW panel.

I hope we get at least a teaser trailer. I haven’t seen any images of Dr. Robotnik. Last time Jim Carey played as a bad guy, he was the Riddler in one of the Batman movies. I bet he is going to make a funny villain for this movie.

I think that’s the lady tune I saw him as a villian too, though I feel like he’s had another bad guy role since and I just didn’t see the him. Some humour to him would work. Robotnik had shay’s had a little touch of comedy to him.

Well if I know anything from Dr. Robotnik, he is a funny villain but he is also pretty touch cookie for Sonic. I can’t wait to see what kind of robots he makes in this movie. I will be surprised if we got Metal Sonic.

I expect them to hint at Metal Snic for a potential sequel in a post credit scene.

That could happen. If the movie does well, we could get a sequel. If anything we could get Shadow in the future.

That really wouldn’t surprise me.

Either way, if we were able to get four Alvin and the Chipmunks live action movies, we could get more Sonic movies lol.

I would be surprised too, though he’d be a nice addition. If the movie succeeds, we could well get sequels featuring other characters though.
