Welcome, one and all, to the Crunchyroll of the Dice 2018 analysis. This year, I ran brackets with twelve series, building a three-way final. It was fun mixing it up like that, and there were some real surprises in the list this year. So … as I did last year, I’m going to start with a basic run down of each match-up:
In a real clash of genres, BTOOOM! got off to a decent start that, in the end, it couldn’t maintain. Gamers wasn’t terrible, but it just didn’t do enough to stand out here.
I was actually expecting a lot less from Twin-Tail. It was a fun little episode. Recovery Of An MMO Junkie set itself up as an early favourite though, giving me the most memorable character of the tournament.
In the biggest stomping on the tournament, Tsuredure Children started its journey towards being the first short episode show to reach the final.
I was looking forward to this battle, and wasn’t disappointed. Both shows served up some fun, albeit in different ways, and neither was a difficult watch,
New Game! was another surprising series this time around, endearing itself to me rather quickly here. It was an easy victory for the slice of life series.
I actually expected this one to be a lot closer than it was. As it happened, there was a clear winner though.
BTOOOM! stumbled here and fell to a far superior opponent.
The first draw of the tournament saw Tsuredure Children eventually become the first short episode finalist in the history of the tournament. I do want to finish 91 Days eventually too.
Both episodes were great fun here, but Chise and co managed to edge it in most of the categories.
Recovery Of An MMO Junkie 5 (7) – 1 Tsuredure Children – (5) 5 The Ancient Magus’ Bride
Sadly, Tsuredure Children stood little chance here. Both longer form shows did a great job though, and it came down to a sudden death situation to decide the winner.
So … what that means is that the final three placed as follows:
- Recovery Of An MMO Junkie
- The Ancient Magus’ Bride
- Tsuredure Children
In both previous tournaments the tally of total points saw a slight difference between the final standings and the overall points table, and 2018 was no different. In fact, gong by total points, the results look like this:
- The Ancient Magus’ Bride – 22 Points
- Recovery Of An MMO Junkie – 20 Points
- Tsuredure Children – 18 Points
This actually comes down to The Ancient Magus’ Bride stomping opponents right up until the final. It was actually the most consistent performer I the tournament this year. Given how close it was between the top two, it seems fitting that it ended this way. But what of the first round losers? Well, I would like to continue with RE:Zero. The others, perhaps not.
And that’s about it! So, how did you all find this year’s tournament? Did you have any favourite matches? Let me know in the comments below.
