Sonic the Hedgehog #8 [IDW Publishing] – Comic ReviewSeptember 14, 2018
Welcome, one and all, to the latest instalment of my ongoing thoughts on IDW’s Sonic comics! We’re picking up right where the last issue left off, with Sonic trying to figure out what Metal Sonic’s plan is. So, let’s get into it!
- Sonic the Hedgehog #8
- IDW Publishing
- Story: Ian Flynn
- Art: Evan Stanley
- Colours: Matt Herms
As always, I’ll start with the cover. I got Cover B by the issue artist, Evan Stanley, and I’ve gotta say, it’s my favourite of the three this month. It’s simple, but it does give you a sense of intrigue regarding the new character debuting this issue, so that’s a definite pro in my mind.
When it comes to the interiors, Evan Stanley’s art is really good. What I love about it is that, even with the high octane action and darker moments, she does a fantastic job with creating really animated facial expressions. Silver in particular is absolutely adorkable when he starts fanboying about the ‘Guardian Angel’. This is all once again complimented perfectly by Matt Herms on colour duty, and he really helps bring things to life.
The story is moving swiftly, with a nice reveal of Metal Sonic’s plan at the end of the issue. The key moment though is the debut of Whisper the Wolf. Using her Wisp weapon like a sniper rifle, she’s certainly got a lot to add to the action. What I really liked though was the easy to miss hint at something far darker with her: towards the end of the issue, there’s a moment where Sonic asks her, “What did Eggman do to you?” This is because, while softly spoken, she is enraged when confronted with Eggman tech. That she clams up again when asked to cool off is definitely a sign that she’s suffered. I like the quirk that she keeps her eyes closed unless angry too, though I wonder if her only speaking in one word at a time is something that will be moved away from as she learns to open up more.
All in all, the series is remaining consistently strong, and I’m waiting eagerly for the next one. As such, this is another 4 out of 5 for me.
