30 Day Gaming Challenge: #26 – Best Voice Acting

Welcome, one and all, to another 30 Day Gaming Challenge post. We’re now at day 26, which means that we’re looking at … best voice acting.

Okay, my pick here is an odd one. There are some really good games in terms of voice acting. But one game in particular holds a special place in my heart …

Resident Evil PlayStation PS1 PSOne Jill Valentine Barry Burton Sandwich
You were almost a gerbil sandwich …

No, I’m not joking. The original Resident Evil on the PS1 technically had some terrible voice acting. I mean, I still mishear as “You were almost a Jill sandwich” as “You were almost a gerbil sandwich.” But there’s just something about it that really stands out to me. Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe it’s the way it makes the whole thing like a so-bad-it’s-good B-movie. Maybe it’s just because I loved that game. Whatever the reason though, the voice acting has stuck with me. As such, it may not be the best in the conventional sense, but it is the best for me simply for being so bad yet enjoyable at the same time.

What about yourselves? What game do you think had the best voice acting, whether legitimately or simply because it stood out for you?

  1. Resident Evil certainly has a nostalgic feel to it with the voices. Two games for me had great voice acting: Metal Gear Solid and the entire Mass Effect series 😊Both had some terrific actors in them 😀

  2. Anything but picking a Japanese game with top-tier Japanese VAs is a travesty here. They are just in a league of their own regarding that. 🙂

(which is not to say that ie Mass Effect isn’t also great)

      1. I’ve been thinking about that, but kinda gave up. Too many choices for various reasons. Maybe the Yakuza series? For having its protagonist sing karaoke. And Goro Majima.
        Or both:

Also, using real life hostesses as ingame hostesses. And other such weirdness.

But I guess overall it’s just how consistently great they are. I can’t think of one where the VA is rubbish.

  3. Oh, you are right. Well, it seems like a direct port? Apparently lots of other Sega stuff, as well. Good news I have to say.

To be honest, I lost a little bit of interest with Yakuza 5. In the past I was always amused by the typical Japanese idiosyncrasies, but these days I’m more likely to be annoyed.

    1. I didn’t play any of them after Yakuza 2, as I only got a PS3 a few years ago, long after the release. I saw Yakuza and Persona mentioned, but I haven’t seen an updated list yet. I think I read that there were going to be ten ports, or something like that?

  4. Don’t know the exact list; I just know that it’s a few more. And I guess they’ll keep doing.
Personally I’m mostly looking forward to Valkyria Chronicles 4. Haven’t really checked reviews about whether it’s any good but 1 and 3 were pretty neat, so hopefully…
