30 Day Gaming Challenge: #20 – Favourite Genre

Welcome, one and all, to Day 20 of the 30 Day Gaming Challenge. Today’s topic is … favourite genre. Now, this one is pretty easy. You see, I enjoy most genres of gaming, but there are two that I come back to time and time again: 2D Platformers and Beat ‘em Ups.

Sonic, Mario, Sparkster the Rocket Night et al have dominated my playing for a long time. While I do enjoy modern 3D platformers, not to mention the earlier efforts of series like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, the old style 2D ones are my usual go to. I don’t know how much of that is nostalgia driven, how much is my ineptitude in 3D plains, and how much is how the games feel, but the old style ones just really sit well with me.

There were plenty of others to, like Pit Fighter, Ballz and Clay Fighter, but SFII and MK were the ones that everyone wanted. As time went on, my catalogue expanded and my current favourites are Street Fighter Alpha 2, BlazBlue Central Fiction and Mortal Kombat XL.
How about yourselves? Any favourite genres?

  1. I used to love beat-em-ups but then got burnt out on em. My current fave genre is RPG. I dig good stories and get satisfaction from seeing my characters get stronger as they level up.

    1. RPGs I find can be great fun, or get tedious. If the story and characters engage me then I don’t mind grinding levels so much, but if it doesn’t grab me, I get dragged downa little with the repetition of levellng up. There are some fantastic ones out there though!

        1. I do enjoy a good ice hockey game. Football games I seem to be very variable on. I tried the last FIFA and was doing alright to begin with. Winning matches with ease with the Republic of Ireland thanks to a lot of through balls … then I upped the difficulty and it all fell apart pretty quickly. I kinda miss Road to World Cup 98. I was good at that one.

          1. Yeah, RTWC98 was ace! I use to hammer that one back in the day. I’m a jaded Pro Evo player, kinda fell out with it a few years ago when it got too hard/I got too old!
