And so, the 30 day anime challenge reaches day 17. Today’s topic is … Favourite supporting male anime character.
Hmm … now this is an interesting one. A lot of the time, it’s easy to get wrapped up in liking the main protagonist or antagonist, thusly causing the supporting cast to drift into the background. On top of that, there’s the question of whether someone is a supporting character or a main character. With this in mind, I’m going to offer a couple of different choices.
First up, we have Batou, in particular the Ghost in the Shell: SAC version. The reason for going for this version of the character is that he’s far more like the manga version than the animated film version was. In general, he’s an outgoing joker with a very low tolerance for injustice. Throw in that he’s a legitimate bad as too, and we have a potent cocktail of awesome. Of course, the problem here is that you could view Batou as a primary character rather than a supporting one. So …
I’m also listing Left Hand from Vampire Hunter D. The symbiotic partner of the titular dunpeal does share some traits with Batou insofar as being outgoing in nature, and more than a little bit of a joker. Where he gets interesting though is the way he coexists with his host. He and D work well in tandem and do well together in combat situations. Even so, he also balances out D, not only as he is more likely to advise playing it safe than D is, but also because he’s less caring towards those in distress.
So, what about yourselves? Any favourite supporting males?
Mine is probably Portgas D Ace

I thought it might be. I read a bunch of chapters back when Shonen Jump had a physical release, but I haven’t seen the anime as yet

Left Hand’s final line in Bloodlust cracked me up.

Me too. It was so beautifully adverse to the tone of the test of the film, and that made it even funnier.

I feel bad I’ve hardly read any of your blog Matt. But let’s see I love mitsuhide from Snow White with the red hair. Off the top of my head he’s so honest and loyal to prince zen. Their bond is really heartfelt to witness 😁

LOL. That’s no problem. There’s a fair bit of it now!
I’ve but actually seen that one. What sort of series is it?

It’s a romance series. It’s got great comedic factor and such a refreshing watch with two solid main leads. Many things to like about them and the whole series 😁

Excellent. Sounds like it’s not one of the more standard rom-coms then.

Hum. I don’t think I have anyone in particular for this thing. There’s some that are kinda funny – like Excalibur in Soul Eater or the Principal in Hidamari Sketch – and some that are kinda badass – like Hughes in FMA or Chang in Black Lagoon – but I can’t say I can come up with a single one that completely stands out. Which isn’t surprising given that they are supposed to be side characters, but, dunno … mh. Wait. Maybe Hijikata from Gintama. He’s pretty awesome.
(and yeah, Batou in SAC is definitely a main character ^^).

Yeah, I thought I may be pushing it a bit with Batou. I do like Excalibur, Hughes and Chang though. As you said though, it’s not surprising that side characters don’t usually stand out.
