Way Cool Wednesday: 8 February 2016

Hello, one and all, and welcome to the first Way Cool Wednesday posting of 2017! I know that a lot of people had a pretty torrid time in 2016, so what better way to get the year off to a good start than with some assorted coolness from around the web?

WAY COOL VIDEO: BEAUTY OF THE BASE TALKS

So, Beauty of the Bass is a pretty interesting fursuit character. First up, the design is awesome. In fact, it reminds me a little of Beetlejuice era Tim Burton. Secondly, those speakers on the costume actually work. While this has previously been utilised for music, she’s been running tests for actual speech. My word this is all kinds of awesome (and slightly creepy, in a good way). She’s a fellow UK resident too, so that’s a bonus. Anyway, enjoy!

WAY COOL ARTICLE: NERDS WITHOUT STIGMA – WHY ‘THE LIBRARIANS’ IS ONE OF TV’S MOST IMPORTANT SHOWS

https://t.co/R8NjgWY5w6

So, most people have heard of ‘The Big Bang Theory’. As someone who has been called both a geek and a nerd many times, I am apparently supposed to love that show. The thing is, I really don’t. Bar one scene with Katee Sackhoff and George Takei, it just doesn’t make me laugh. The article above deals with a different show filled with nerdy characters: The Librarians. Now, I will admit that I started watching the show purely because I saw that Christian Kane was in it, and I find him to be rather pleasant to watch. As it went on though, I found the show to be pretty damn enjoyable overall. The article above points to the show as being important for the way that it treats people who are seen as different (and we really do have a nice variety of different characters on display here), and I can’t say that I disagree. Give it a read. Check out the show. See what you think.

WAY COOL BLOG POST: A YURI ON ICE DREAM

https://fujinsei.com/2017/02/03/yurionice-love-gayornot-owlsflight/

So, if you haven’t seen, there’s now a group of anime bloggers collectively called OWLS (Otaku Warriors for Liberty and Self-Respect). The idea of the group is to, once a month, post thoughtful themed articles that demonstrate positive things shown in anime. The posting above is by Aria Cross and covers the popular anime, Yuri on Ice, with a focus on how it represents an acceptance for gay characters. It’s a great read, and I highly recommend it.

WAY COOL ARTICLE: REFERENCES TO ALIENS IN HALO

http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_references_to_Aliens_in_Halo

So, I avoided Halo for a long time. Why? Because I grew up with a fair few FPS games. I remember when the sixth formers managed to sneak a  copy of Doom on the school network, I loved Quake, Unreal, Half Life and Blood II: The Chosen … but I fell out of love with the genre. I finally gave in and got a copy of The Master Chief Collection when I got an Xbox One S, and my word this series is glorious! Meanwhile, Aliens is my least favourite of the original Alien trilogy. I enjoy it, but it feels more like an action film than an Alien film to me. It’s a fun film though, and picking up on the references in the Halo series is also fun! So, here’s a list.

WAY COOL ARTICLE: IT’S TIME TO ELEVATE GOTHAM’S JEROME TO THE FULL JOKER

http://www.cbr.com/make-gotham-jerome-full-joker

This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like; CBR’s piece on why Jerome should take on the role of The Joker in the Batman prequel series, Gotham. Being a fan of Jerome the first time around, I can’t say I disagree.

WAY COOL MUSC: LETZTE INSTANZ – WIR SIN EINS

Neue Deutsche Harte doesn’t really get enough love as a subgenre of rock. It’s mostly a form of industrial metal that features heavy syth elements, giving it a bit of a pop music feel at times. While Oomph! are still my favourites in the these guys popped up on my YouTube recently and I am loving the feel of the music, especially as it pertains to their use of cello and violin. Good, catchy stuff!

And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed the random fun of the first WCW of 2017. Thanks for reading everybody, I’ll catch ya later!
