Way Cool Halloween 2016

Hello one and all and welcome to another Way Cool Wednesday … only on a Monday. Why on a Monday this time? Is it some creepy twilight zone time displacement? Have the days of the week been altered by a single text from Okabe? Perhaps Metal Sonic has been dashing through the Time Posts and hauled us all through time with him? Nope. It’s because it’s Halloween and I wanted to post some spooky stuff. Now, I must warn you. While I try to be generally PG in what I post (with the odd exception), this is not a posting that is suitable for children. Let’s see why:

WAY COOL AMV: ELFEN LIED – LILIUM

Long-time readers of the site will know that I am not a big fan of fan service. I’m also not a fan of (though not adverse to) gratuitous violence in movies for the sake of it. Despite this, Elfen Lied has managed to worm its way into my heart as one of my all-time favourites. It breaks the rules for me, but it does so in such a way that I can’t help but enjoy the series to the point that I wish the mange would get a Western release in English. The above video is set to the iconic ‘Lilium’ from the series’ OST, and shows a good mix of both the gory violence and the less violent moments of the series.

WAY COOL MUSIC: HOM SHA BOM – TWIZTID

I tend to listen to a wide variety of music, mostly because I believe that avoiding a single genre means you’ll likely miss out on something good. That said, I do tend to find that rap and hip hop rarely tickle my hearing buds. There are exceptions of course, and this is one of them. If I’m being completely honest, I’m not a big fan of the music video, but nothing beats blocking the world out with this on your headphones while walking alone over a foggy field in a half-asleep daze of a morning. It creeps you out through the sheer imagery of the story-telling.

WAY COOL AUDIO DRAMA: TRUCK STOP HORROR

Nowhere near as grisly as the two previous links, but nevertheless, the Chilling Tale For Dark Nights team do a fantastic job here and tell an old style spooky tale by way of a radio drama. I was kinda tempted to sot a Lovecraft adaption here, but this was the first thing I heard from the CTFDN channel, and so it holds a special place in my heart.

WAY COOL INDIE FILM: PARALYSIS

This one surprised me. I was expecting it to be the usual ‘lady running screaming and going outside when they shouldn’t’ scenario, but the film is far from that. It’s not going to be remembered in the same way that things like An American Werewolf In London or Alien are, but it does deserve some recognition for pulling off something cool with a limited budget.

WAY COOL AMV: SOUL EATER – THIS IS HALLOWEEN

This is an obvious one, but I couldn’t help it. Soul Eater is good fun, and the Marilyn Manson version of This Is Halloween from the Nightmare Before Christmas OST is a good fit for it.

WAY COOL PARODY: PINGU’S THE THING

If you haven’t seen this before, you’re in for a treat. It is basically what it sounds like: The Thing re-enacted by the cast of Pingu. It’s quick, it’s well done for what it is, and if you’ve seen the source material (both the film and the children’s TV show), then it’s a bizarrely good mash-up.

WAY COOL SHIRT (AND SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION BECAUSE IT’S MINE): IS, HUGS?

raunisex_tshirtx310410101001c5ca27c6front-c650630900975-bgf8f8f8-u1

IS is a cat. Or that’s he told us anyway. Honestly, we just didn’t want to argue with him. IS likes dark corners, herbal tea, and your soul. Literally YOUR soul. Now that he’s seen it, he wants it. Mostly though, IS just wants a hug.

WAY COOL PRANK: THE GIANT SPIDER

And finally, some humour. What happens here is that someone dressed their dog up as a giant spider and let it loose on various people. The dog is clearly having a great time, and the victims are suitably terrified. All in all, great fun for all.

And there we go. Happy Halloween everyone one!

I’ve linked to Amazon’s listing of Elfen Lied below. If you fancy it, feel free to click through from here and I’ll get some cash as an affiliate.

  1. Pingu’s The Thing was awesome. It would be cool if Elfen Lied’s manga got localized, as the anime didn’t cover all of the source material. I also enjoyed Brynhildir, written by the same author, although I seem to be in the minority when it comes to enjoying that series.
