Way Cool Wednesday – 13 July 2016

So, here we go with another Way Cool Wednesday. As always, I’ve been aimlessly trawling the internet and taking note of whatever random things happen to leap out at me. Herein lays the latest collected results of my internet adventures …

WAY COOL BLOG POST: THE 18 MOST AWESOME THINGS RAINBOW’S BUNGLE HAS EVER DONE

http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/bungle/34743/the-18-most-awesome-things-rainbows-bungle-has-ever-done

Back in the days of my misspent youth, we had far less choice on TV. You see, for the longest time, we did not have cable or satellite, so we were limited to whatever happened to appear on the basic four channels. Don’t despair though, because we had some cracking shows throughout the years. Hidden away amongst all this awesome was the ultimate in children’s entertainment: Rainbow. This was a show that was about a man, a pink hippo, a large bear and … whatever Zippy was … living together and doing what they do. Oh, and sometimes, popular children’s entertaining trio Rod, Jane and Freddy (previously Rod, jane and Roger) would appear to sing a song. As a kid, I absolutely loved this show. Looking back on it as an adult, it was truly odd at times. But hey, that’s what makes it entertaining at my current age! This particular posting from the awesome ‘Den of Geek!’ details 18 strange and wonderful things that Bungle the bear did during the run … and yes, this really did pass as children’s entertainment back in the day.

WAY COOL BONUS VIDEO: RAINBOW – THE TWANGER EPISODE

Rumour has it that the staff at Thames TV, the network behind Rainbow, were having a Christmas party. In preparation for this, the cast of Rainbow got together and filmed some entertainment for the rest of the staff: an episode of Rainbow that was full of innuendos. This is glorious in such a bizarre way, and I for one am so glad that it surfaced on the wacky world of the internet.

WAY COOL BLOG POST: WHY ANIME MAY NOT BE FOR EVERYBODY

https://thelimitlessimagination.wordpress.com/2016/05/03/a-cross-cultural-comparison-of-tv-why-anime-may-not-be-for-everybody/

That’s right, another blog posting. What I like about this post is that, while I don’t necessarily agree with all the sentiments expressed, it’s put across in a very clear manner and does a really good job of presenting the views of the author. It’s long, yes, but the content therein is worthwhile, if for no other reason than that it gives a decent theory as to why anime is not everyone’s cup of tea.

WAY COOL VIDEO: FARSCAPE – MOYA AND PILOT [BEHIND THE SCENES]

As attested to in a couple of my other postings, I rather like SciFi. One of my favourite SciFi series of all time (and by that I mean right up there with Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Battlestar Galactica remake) is Farscape. The show started off with a run of episodes that, if I’m being honest, I thought meandered a little bit while it introduced the key characters and their world. Once it kicked into gear though … wow! One of the greatest achievements of the show was that it creates an atmosphere where you forget that the Jim Henson Creations puppets that form part of the cast are in fact puppets. This video talks a little about Moya, the living ship that the main characters inhabit, and Pilot, who is of course Moya’s pilot. Unfortunately, it doesn’t go into any detail about the episode where Moya (again, the ship) gave birth.

WAY COOL MUSIC: THE GORILLAZ

This week, I’m giving some love to the animated band, The Gorillaz. What makes them cool? The music is a wonderful mix of chilled and funky, the art was done by Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl fame, and Damon Albarn of indie rock giants Blur was their creator.
