Way Cool Wednesday – 1 June 2016

OK, so I wanted to do another of these posts last week, but I was in somewhat of a poor state. Illness, pain, the whole shebang. As a result, we have had to wait until now. So … what have I stumbled upon this time around?

WAY COOL BLOG POST: HOW THEY DID THE TRANSFORMATION SCENE IN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON [MATURE]

http://cassieshouseofhorror.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/beneath-skin-how-they-did.html

Anyone who knows me well will have heard a number of things stated on multiple occasions. One of these is my love of ‘practical effects’ in films (a special effect produced physically, without computer-generated imagery or other post production techniques) and my preference for these over CG. Mostly, this comes down to how I perceive the effects. With CG, I can tell that it’s CG and so tell that it’s not really there. Suspension of disbelief for me is easier with a physical effect and as a result, even a hokey puppet gets my vote every time. This particular piece is most definitely not hokey though. Now, I love werewolf films in general (heck, I even own an old encyclopaedia of werewolf lore and films. In recent years, three films seem to rotate in and out of ‘Top Werewolf Film’ lists: Dog Soldiers, The Howling, and American Werewolf in London. All three of these films are fantastic in different ways in my opinion. To this day, and despite the 1981 release year, the transformation scene in American Werewolf in London remains one of the most enduringly impressive pieces of horror film work. This posting shows the video of the transformation, shows a more recent transformation for comparison (Cursed from 2005) and then explains how it was done. It’s graphic, but an interesting read.

WAY COOL VIDEO: A PUPPET

This is basically a collection of advertising slogans with an honest twist. Click on it, hit random, and see what comes up. Depending on your sense of humour, some of these may well make you giggle.

WAY COOL MUSIC: SAVATAGE – ONE CHILD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KcdYdDCV44

There was a time when I discovered new music by visiting the local music shop and looking through the thank you list in the lyrics books for any albums that grabbed my attention. One day, I saw an album called ‘Poets and Madmen’ by a band called Savatage, saw that they thanked the pro-wrestlers Raven and The Blue Meanie in the lyrics book, and bought it. It was a great album. This particular song is from an album that came out some years before that, ‘Dead Winter Dead’. What I like about it is that it’s the only official music video they did for a song that showcases their signature counter-point vocals. Honestly, he layering here is more impressive than Queen. Don’t believe me? Jump in to 2:47 and listen as they slowly layer up several different melodies until they’re all going at once, playing over the top of each other, yet still entirely clear.
